Hiking in Montserrat. Do you want to experience the tremendous story about Barcelona? Don’t miss this valued proposition, from an exclusive hiking-service while accompanied by an experienced mountain guide.
Hiking the wildest parts of Montserrat is an experience you won’t forget for the rest of your life. Montserrat is one of the top tourist destinations. But tourists traveling by bus, and visiting little more than the Benedictine monks’ Monastery, don’t experience the essence of this mountain.
We offer a seven-hour hiking experience through the capricious geological formations that are more than 35 million years old. These unique spires delight any rock climbers and hikers alike. You too can experience feeling the fatigue of your body and the happiness of reaching your goal.
The route starts on the west end of the mountain, which has spires where local mountaineers where initiated in rock climbing. Then the hike continues with a succession of ups and downs through the “Frares Encantats” and “Ecos” areas, taking us to San Jeroni, the highest point of the ridge. This point is 1200 meters above sea level with vertical walls over 500m on its northern side.
and dominate the entire region, giving rise to many legends among the local citizens. Legends like “Hors enchanted” about the devil making an agreement with a greedy lumberjack. You’ll be part of these legends as the guide explains them while hiking in this stunning area.
In addition, the mountain is dotted with small chapels and places where monks lived in isolation in search of themselves. You can also experience the mystical loneliness so far from city life and yet so close to the city of Barcelona.
Then you will continue in the “Tebes” and “Tebaida” area, where war and destruction occurred and created more epic stories, like the Drummer of Bruc’s legend. Later, you will reach the land of tarantulas, to see hermitages, where you’ll see the Holy Cave where the image of the Virgin was found and “Fra Gari” with its mysterious legend about sin and forgiveness.
There is no better way to experience this mountain than feeling the fatigue of walking 14 km, climbing 2,000 meters of accumulated elevation, and finally getting to the Monastery at the eastern end of the mountain.
The monastery is where about 60 Benedictine monks have lived for more than 1000 years, together with an older European boys-choir. This is a magical place where the image of the “Moreneta,” Black Madonna, is the name of the patron’s Monastery. It’s truly a place of pilgrimage for local believers and therefore very popular. You will feel privileged to have walked on this wild and secluded mountain as few have done.
